Feyona van Stom – Sculptor & Artist

I have lived in Hong Kong, USA and Australia, and have exhibited my art since 1990.

My sculptures have been taking me on their own journey. The subject is usually the human body in all its shapes and sizes, usually torsos and heads, but also abstracted forms.

I have been exhibiting since 1990 in galleries and local town exhibitions as well as many charity and art auctions, artsydney fairs, and at SOFA NEW YORK and SOFA CHICAGO ( the prestigious international Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art fairs in USA) for 7 years.

Invitations to exhibit in the United States, New Zealand, China and India, have been as exciting as exhibiting in Australia — in Sydney where we live, but also in Victoria, Perth, and in regional towns like Braidwood, Gulgong and Crookwell.

There is joy in the investigation of clays, techniques, shapes and accidental differences, using glazes and primitive firings.  I love large and dramatic bodies, and movement in the shapes is all important.

Looking at this sculpture, I realise I’ll never be able to see or touch it again. The wood firing process changes every time, so each work is always unique.

I love to draw, paint and sculpt the human body and am also very interested in colours and abstract painting and the way colours make us feel. My clay bodies and my head sculptures are always a celebration of the human form and its movement. I love primitive firings and the results I get with them from the clay. The experiment is continual, and the ideas are always changing. Clay is not the only material, as I have also worked in glass, bronze, hebel, wood and metals – but clay is my preferred material.

I have always enjoyed donating my works to charities and feel those sculpture donations come back one hundred fold to me. I have recently donated works to charities to assist the firies in the terrible fires of 2019/2020.

I have opened and operated my own galleries in Australia:

  • Whale Beach Gallery, Whale Beach NSW

  • gallery41 in Woolloomooloo NSW

  • gallery41 online

I have been President of the Sculptors Society of NSW for more than 10 years, and was Vice president for 3 years before that.
